I could very well have ruined it had I not set it aside. I also find it important to have those little secondary projects just to keep me writing.

Enjoying the process doesn't always happen with a story so when it does it makes more a very enjoyable time. Sounds like you're having a good time while THE SECRET DIARY is setting. Letting a story set is so important!!

Thanks. I will definitely look these authors up. My son keeps insisting that fantasy is the best kind of fiction and takes much more imagination to write. He may be right.

I only really started reading fantasy when I picked up Harry Potter several years ago. To me I found the enormous tomes intimidating and when I did actually open one, a tad boring. Now I've found quite a few authors that have really pulled me in and I found fantasy doesn't have to be a long slog through someone else's world building.

Try Philip Pullman, Naomi Novik, Charlaine Harris, Angie Sage. There are others but I can't think of them just now. The names listed are a mixture of YA and regular fiction but these authors certainly helped me find my way to loving fantasy.

Reading your post I realize that I've never really read fantasy/scifi. I'm sure I'm missing out on plenty of wonderful stories. I may just have to remedy that in the near future.

Believe me, I have dozens of stories where I've simply been unable to leave it alone and I've spent so much time on the editing I've not been able to get it finished.

It's been over twelve months since I started actually writing this story seriously. I got the idea for it about two years before that. I can't say it's speeded anything except that this second draft has come a little more easily since I knew the story so well. The organisation part is more of a trial and error scenario. I'm learning how to be a better writer as I write.

I hope things are going well with your current draft. Just rmeember, the story won't ever finish unless you manage to just write it all down, regardless of the actual wording. It's hard but as I've come to realise, important.

For some reason I find it very difficult to write that first draft from start to finish without looking back. Maybe someday I'll make it to that place. I'm not there yet. You sound very organized. I have a feeling that really speeds things up along the way.

When a spark of an idea presents itself I'll immediately write it down. If I think it'll make a good story I'll then nut out a few paragraphs. I'm a terrible planner so I have to try very hard not to just rush in. If I do it usually ends with me running out of steam and my story left floundering with no where to go.

Had I known my blog was going to generate interest I would have done as you asked ages ago Eric. I'm very much a novice when it comes to the internet so you'll have to bear with me I'm afraid. I will do my utmost to get your requests up and running as soon as possible. If you're interested then I guess others might be too.

I'm the same Laura. If the book hasn't got me by the time I've read the first page I usually put it straight back down. But I sometimes wonder as writers are we more judgmental when it comes to reading those first few paragraphs?

I have, in the past, bought a book because of the cover and blurb. I also check out the first few paragraphs. I don't necessarily need to be hooked by the first line but I can usually tell in those first few paragraphs if I'm going to enjoy it.
